Overview
The National University of Singapore (NUS) Master of Science in Sustainable Healthcare (MSc-SH) is offered by the Centre for Sustainable Medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUSMed).
The Lancet calls climate change the greatest global health threat and opportunity of the 21st century. Simultaneously, healthcare faces unprecedented headwinds. Global healthcare demand is rising unsustainably, driven by an ageing population, expanding healthcare access and increasing burden of chronic diseases. The health sector, responsible for 4–7% of global emissions, exacerbates these challenges through energy-intensive operations and carbon-heavy clinical practices, which account for up to 80% of a healthcare facility's carbon footprint.
This world-leading Masters programme provides you with a comprehensive understanding in how global environmental systems affect human health, and a strong foundation in the principles of sustainable healthcare practice, as well as analytic skillsets such as carbon accounting in the healthcare setting. You will have access to a suite of specialised and transdisciplinary modules while having the flexibility to tailor to your personal learning needs and career goals.
Graduates will be equipped to catalyse healthcare’s transition toward a climate-resilient, low carbon future, with a competitive edge in key roles in fields such as:
Healthcare ManagementChief Sustainability Officer Clinical Director of Sustainability
ResearchResearch Engineer Regulatory Compliance Specialist
Medical Technology & PharmaceuticalsR&D Application Technologist Sustainable Innovation Manager
Public Health & GovernanceSenior Health Policy Officer Director of Public Health
Supply Chain & OperationsHealthcare Procurement Lead Senior Energy and Carbon Analyst
Why This Programme?
Develop core competencies related to climate change, health, and health systems, and specialist skills in carbon reporting and management practices within healthcare systems, to accelerate the transition to net zero.
Gain hands-on, experiential learning on how to drive and implement net zero healthcare, and have the opportunity to collaborate on the Centre for Sustainable Medicine's ongoing projects.
Take advantage of the programme's in-built flexibility to customise your learning to match your career aspirations.
